SFEL offers a purely Ecological Lodging service, with solar power, solar shower and composting toilets. Our rooms are housed in the local Konso “tikka”, a thickly thatched wooden hut of perfectly circular dimensions. The clay walls are a foot thick, as is the grass roof, offering fantastic natural insulation for day-time coolness and night-time snugness. We are a quiet and refreshing alternative to the noisy grubby hotels in Karat Konso town, but unlike other lodges in the area we offer good value for money! Our lodge is the authentic local cultural experience. It was built by the local people, employing their time-honored traditional craftsmanship and using local natural materials.
Each room is furnished with cultural style beds, bedsides table and chairs and wash basin. Mosquito nets are provided and the rooms are regularly fumigated with the smoke of a local Euphorbia plant called “kinchib”, which keeps the insects away(both big and small!).
We use a solar electric lighting and power system for the lodge and the restaurant, so you can charge your appliances at the reception any time. You will be issued with a Sollatek Glow Star Lantern, which is a portable solar lantern you take to your room for the night. If you need to visit the compost toilet or the solar shower after dark, this will accompany you. Our rooms are simple, but clean and comfortable.
Our room rates are very competitive, including BUDGET and MID-RANGE options. We are suitable for backpackers, overlander and tourists that do not demand every mod-con they would have back at home. If you want Luxury we suggest Hess Travel's Lodge up the road)
